“There are definitely a couple of decisions they have to make so hopefully I will get a good shot at sticking with the team. You never know what is going to happen, but everybody’s goal is to make it to the NHL and I just want to hopefully play there all year.”---Evan McGrath
Apparently, someone is going to be gunning for a roster spot on the big club at training camp this year. If you remember, McGrath just re-signed with the organ-i-zation not too long ago.
“It has been a bit of a travel to get here. It is definitely exciting and it’s your goal to get your first game and your first year under your belt, so that’s my goal right now.”
I appreciate your enthusiasm, Evan, and I don't want to rain on your parade...but this lineup is going to be ridiculously hard for you to crack. Especially with the signings of Patrick Eaves and Jason Williams to go along young guns Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkader. That's quite a few players McGrath will have to leap-frog if he wants to spend any time in Detroit this year, let alone the whole season. I guess we will just have to wait and see how training camp goes.
Stats wise, McGrath had only 14 points in 59 games his first season in Grand Rapids. He then tallied 35 points in 78 games two years ago and 47 points in 68 games last season.
If you look thru hockeydb (ie. waste multiple hours clicking through KHL and ECHL players that you might have heard of), the one thing you will notice is that players who end up making the NHL usually see their AHL points increase year by year, while players that are career minor leaguers usually start with a decent amount of points in the AHL and then slowly decrease as the years go on. This boads well for Mr. McGrath.
