Wings make Walleye ECHL Affiliate

Mark Monroe of Toledoblade.com:

Formerly the the Toledo Storm, the Walleye will become Detroit's Double-A minor league affiliate. The Toledo Storm and the Detroit Red Wings shared a similar relationship for 15+ years.

Head coach Nick Vitucci is excited to get the season underway partly thanks to the logjam of talented young goalies jocking for position within the organ-i-zation right now. Jordan Pierce is the most likely candidate to start with the Walleye. Larsson will take the bulk of the workload in Grand Rapids ahead of Thomas McCollum, and Jimmy Howard will start the season as Chris Osgood's backup.

"We have three young goalies that will all battle it out in training camp. Whoever plays the best will be in Grand Rapids or possibly Detroit. The odd man out will be in Toledo. So either way you look at it, [Toledo] will have a pretty good goalie."--Jim Nill

Vitucci said that the Wings can send him "just one player or seven players", whatever the number, he is honored to be able to coach them.
