Whitley played in net for the Red Wings in their 4-3 loss to the Rangers. Despite the loss, his Allen Americans (CHL) coach and GM, Dwight Mullins praised Whitley for his performance:
"He made nice saves at key moments. For his first pro experience, he looked good."
Whitley had this to say about the game:
"I was pretty nervous. It's the first game I've played in five months or so, but I was looking forward to getting back on my feet."
Not exactly the best summer training regiment, but it apparently did the job. Whitley will be staying in "Camptown" to skate with the big boys. "It'll be a good experience for me to see how they play on the ice," he added.
The 26 year old, 6'2 215 lbs netminder graduated from Lakehead University this past May after leading the LU Thunderwolves to a Queen's Cup championship in 2005-06. He now holds several University records including most career overall wins with 82, best goals against average for an overall season with 2.34 in 2007-08, and best save percentage for an overall season posting .917 in 2007-08.
Well since Jordan Pearce failed to impress, I guess we'll see what this kid can do.
Whitley is not actually under contract with the Red Wings - he's in camp as a tryout, like Dan Cloutier.
ReplyDeleteBut, like you said, maybe since Jordan Pearce shat the bed, he'll get a look.
The world needs doctors, too, Jordan...
Maybe my dream still is alive, this kids is 26 and still giving it a shot.
