Reader Pulse: Background

I just wanted to take a quick pole of what you guys think of the red background. I've received a couple complaints that the color with white text is a little hard to read. I wanted to differentiate this site from other Red Wings blogs, but I obviously do this for you guys, so if you want NOHS to go to the standard white background color, just let me know.

  1. Can't read the site without my glasses--but then, I can't read most anything without them. :/ Seriously though, it is a little difficult to see the words clearly on the bright red. Love the idea though.

  2. I haven't had any problems reading the White on Bright Red. Plus it makes your website look like a home game jersey :)

  3. I think it works great. Maybe my eyes will hate me in later years, but for now its not a problem at all.

    Keep up the good work.

  4. I just started reading your blog this summer and have been really enjoying it. I'm torn on the background, though. On the one hand, I appreciate the team spirit/enthusiasm of the Red Wings Red. On the other hand, it makes it hard for me to descretely read your blog at work, as it's obviously not work-related. When it comes down to it, though, the content is all I really care about and it's what keeps me coming back.

  5. I don't have an issue with it on here. The next website I go to has funny colors for a few seconds, though. Heh...I don't care. Do with it what you will.

  6. Personally I'd prefer a white background. If I spend too much time looking at the red background, my eyes go all weird and it's hard to switch back to white background sites. Not to mention the contrast with the red background and white text isn't exactly ideal (white background with red text would be better if you want to stick with the Wings color scheme).

  7. love the red background, something different. my eyes are awful in the first place and it doesn't give me a hard time at all.

  8. I like the idea of a red background, but since most of my internet time is at work, is very dangerous readin' ya.

It's really a shame have to go "No style" at Firefox to read your blog.

  9. I don't mind it at all. I think it's cool having Wings colors on a Wings blog.

  11. Actually, I find the blue links to be the only bad part. I love the red and white.

  12. actually after viewing it on some lcd screens I like #a90a0a better as a background color. the blue does have to go though.

  14. Also consider as a headline font:
    Impact, Impact5, Charcoal6, sans-serif

    and as a body font:
    Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif

  15. Giving the whole, "red on white" thing a try based on some comments.

Not sure if I like it as much, but I don't want to cause any long-time problems for our readers. Maybe I'll switch back, maybe we'll do a home/away thing based on the next game...

  16. I'm not digging it, but I like the idea..

  17. Yea, I think its a bit too much white. If the white is going to stay, what about putting something ghosted in really (really) light in the background so it not all the same white (kind of give it some texture). Something that doesn't distract the eye though. It kinda hurts my eyes with all this white.

It just needs a bit more color then the text alone. I personally loved the red and had no problems reading on it. It gave the site a feel that no other Wings blog has.

  18. I agree with Jeff and the whole 'ghosted' idea. The pure white is very, very white. It might be nice to tone it down a bit. However, with my old, old, old eyes, I might not be the one to get an opinion from. ;)

  19. So the red is too much and the white is too much, seriously...what do you people want? I played around with some of the colors that Hippy Dave has provided (thanks, man). I'll try a few things out over the weekend and on Monday I'll have it settled. I really appreciate the feed back, guys...keep it up.

  20. Seems it might just be me but I'd say most people who commented actually preferred the Red background. Again, maybe it's just me thought. Either way, this white is giving me a headache, it's way too much. I thought the red was absolutely perfect, as everyone else has said, it made the blog unique.

  21. Thanks, Drew; I'd hate to see a white background. Freaking overdone if you ask me. Just because it works on paper doesn't mean it works online. But what do I know... I just do this for a living.

  22. ok.. my latest stabs in the dark for the bkg color:

    #b90000
    #af0909

The last two were too dark.

Still down the #222222 with a thicker font instead of blue, of course.
